FrangipanI and not frangipanE

Yes....these are 2 different things..

Frangipani is a group of flowers grown in the tropics but also in different parts of the world and frangipane is an almond or almond flavoured filling used in different cakes and tarts.

So do not confused them

There are at least 8 types of frangipani but definitely my favourite is the small white and yellow due to its sweet, exotic and sensual fragrance. In some cultures, the plumeria tree is associated with demons and ghost which i dont find any reason for it but anyway..culture is culture..we have to respect each of them.In some other cultures, the flower can be used as a sign of marital status..if it is placed on the left ear..it means that the woman is taken..but if you come across a woman with the flower on the right ear..then go for it because she is seeking a relationship..hope you dont get messed up with right and left and end in the hospital with a broken nose...
but remember that this rule applies in the pacific islands but not in Mauritius...you definitely will end up with a broken something..but who knows..may be its your lucky day...

Beach erosion

Is Global warming a reality?

yes it is! this is another proof of it causing the sea level to rise, beach erosion, leaving coastal trees naked in a sense.its not a joke..so lets all of us stop our greenhouse gas emission..to save our planet.

Caudan by night

We went to have dinner among friends the other night at Shooters in Caudan.Well!nothing impressive for me the restaurant(crowded and loud music) but on the other hand the view of Port-Louis and Caudan is spectacular at night! The sea looks so peaceful with a horizon at infinity.Defintely a place to spend a nice evening....

Church on the beach

On my way to the north of the island,I can never resist to stop and admire this small but cosy church. It is in a place called Cap Malheureux. It should be a christian church but dont ask me what kind catholic or orthodox or..If you know, then let me know..Anyway,I realised that there is no cross on the front..but the bell is there. What makes it special I think is the surrounding. It is right on the beach and you can admire the Gunners Point island in its back in the wonderful blue sea of Cap Malhereux.Well if you are looking for a nice little exotic church for your wedding, here you are...you would love it

Camarons grille

Bought these alive from a guy in Grandbay,Mauritius.Actually, these are not camarons as he said. They are called crevisses.Didnt know! But who cares!for 150 rupees/pound,it looks nice and taste good.Another great idea for a barbecue hors du commun!Enjoy...

If you want a more professional recipe..check this site CAMARONS grilles aux piment et noix de cajou.Ok its in french!dont have the nerve to translate today but another great idea can be found here

Guavas...Goyaves de chines

Guavas are available in mauritius all year round depending on the types of guavas. The strawberry guavas and the lemon guavas are called goyaves des chines. They are available in the beginning of winter (march, april). They are grown mainly in the region of Plaine Champagne,La Brasserie,Chamarel and can be picked freely. While the apple guavas(goyaves verts)contain much more vitamin C than an orange, the strawberry guavas(goyaves des chines rouges)contains a lot of antioxidant. They are really delicious fruits which you should try if your next trip to mauritius is in march or april..

Our Noni...Feuilles tortues

When we speak about Noni, everybody knows about Tahitian noni. But do you know that noni is present in Mauritius though not in large scale as sugar cane or tea. There the people often called the trees as "pied feuille tortues". Why?may be the leaves look like a tortoise,or may be the used the leaves to feed the tortoise,or may be the fruit smell like tortoise,..i really dont know why..let me know if have any idea. But what is this noni after all,if you dont know? Noni(Morinda citrofolia) is a tree from the coffee family. The plant reaches maturity in 18 months and yields a very pungent fruit(thats why people dont plant it so much) every month or so.The plant can reach as high as 9 metres and has large shiny green deep veins leaves. Despite its repulsive odor, this noni fruit is said to be a wonder in cancer therapy apart from being used against rheumatic pain, gout, diabetes etc. However most of these claims have not been proven scientificaly, but this does not mean also that it is ineffective. The content of anthraquinone, damnacanthal and selenium can kill cancer cells. The beta sitosterol can stop spread of cancer.Noni can stimulate white blood cells, the imune system and help the cell membranes to absorb nutrients easily. It has an exceptional Vitamin c content(10times DRI)
In Mauritius there are some firms that produce noni juice but unfortunately noni juice is not as famous as the coconut juice. But anyway its nice to know that it exists there and you can look for it on your next visit.
