Our Noni...Feuilles tortues

When we speak about Noni, everybody knows about Tahitian noni. But do you know that noni is present in Mauritius though not in large scale as sugar cane or tea. There the people often called the trees as "pied feuille tortues". Why?may be the leaves look like a tortoise,or may be the used the leaves to feed the tortoise,or may be the fruit smell like tortoise,..i really dont know why..let me know if have any idea. But what is this noni after all,if you dont know? Noni(Morinda citrofolia) is a tree from the coffee family. The plant reaches maturity in 18 months and yields a very pungent fruit(thats why people dont plant it so much) every month or so.The plant can reach as high as 9 metres and has large shiny green deep veins leaves. Despite its repulsive odor, this noni fruit is said to be a wonder in cancer therapy apart from being used against rheumatic pain, gout, diabetes etc. However most of these claims have not been proven scientificaly, but this does not mean also that it is ineffective. The content of anthraquinone, damnacanthal and selenium can kill cancer cells. The beta sitosterol can stop spread of cancer.Noni can stimulate white blood cells, the imune system and help the cell membranes to absorb nutrients easily. It has an exceptional Vitamin c content(10times DRI)
In Mauritius there are some firms that produce noni juice but unfortunately noni juice is not as famous as the coconut juice. But anyway its nice to know that it exists there and you can look for it on your next visit.
